Limited Edition Archival Pigment Prints on Fine Art Hahnenmüle Paper, 2020-Present
What will future cultures think of the scarred earth we leave behind? Begun in 2020, Supernatural is an ongoing project that documents landscapes transformed by industry. Often hidden from public view, these spaces have been excavated, depleted, and polluted to the point where they appear extra-terrestrial. In the self-staged image, I use my body as a model, bearing witness to these sites and reflecting upon the surreal conditions of the Anthropocene era. My work envisions future archaeological discoveries and other speculative narratives that will be created about our lost civilisation. The images and are not created by AI, but rather the result of extensive research, planning, costume design, and travel.
These are not conventional self-portraits: the compositions read as anonymous, female-coded subject in the terrain. My individual identity– as the subject is obscured - the draped figure represents the mythological feminine in ancient historical artworks, recalling the Venuses, effigies, and fertility figures found in archaeological sites. The draped or wrapped fabric serves as a protective membrane, shielding the figure from the harsh conditions it is subjected to in these dystopian landscapes. The act of photographing myself in these extreme locations also parodies modern influencer culture and contrived notions of sexuality, drawing parallels between our exploitation of nature and the objecthood of the feminine.
